The Role
You will be working as a Fitter and Turner in a large, technically advanced industrial fabrication workshop in Townsville, reporting to the Workshop Supervisor. The work covers fitting, machining, assembly, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment and components across five divisions. This is a precision machining and mechanical fitting role. Lathes, mills, drills, and precision measuring equipment are your day-to-day tools. A maintenance-only background without genuine machining experience will not suit this environment.
Day to day you will be:
- Operating manual lathes, milling machines, and drills to manufacture and repair mechanical components to tight tolerances
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and technical documentation independently and accurately
- Using precision measuring equipment including micrometers, verniers, and bore gauges to manufacturing tolerance
- Diagnosing mechanical faults independently and determining repair requirements without step-by-step direction
- Fitting and assembling mechanical components across a range of industrial equipment and fabrication scopes
- Working alongside boilermakers, welders, and electricians on complex one-off industrial fabrication projects
- Building toward and taking on leadership responsibilities as you progress through the three-tier pay system
Standard hours are Monday to Friday, workshop-based, home every night. If you are an experienced fitter turner, mechanical fitter, or precision machinist from a machine shop, manufacturing plant, or heavy industrial workshop background, this role is worth a serious look.
What We Need
- Recognised trade qualification as a Fitter and Turner or Mechanical Fitter, non-negotiable
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with lathes, milling machines, and drills to manufacturing tolerance, maintenance-only backgrounds without machining experience will not be considered
- Precision measuring equipment competency, manufacturing to tight tolerances is central to this role
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation independently
- Fault diagnosis and mechanical problem-solving capability, must be able to diagnose and determine repair requirements without close direction
- Experience in a heavy industrial or manufacturing workshop environment, candidates from similar environments will adapt quickest
- Genuinely committed to settling in Townsville long term, candidates considering mine work or FIFO in the future are not the right fit
- Family-oriented, settled mindset, Monday to Friday workshop life is the lifestyle this role offers
Why This Role
At 40 to 45 AUD/hr plus penalties, with a transparent three-tier pay progression and the most varied machining and fitting work available in North Queensland across five divisions, this is a role that rewards genuine precision machining skill and keeps experienced tradespeople engaged long term. Monday to Friday, home every night, in a city that is affordable, warm, and genuinely liveable for a family.
For Kiwi fitter turners and mechanical fitters who want to use their full skillset across technically interesting work and build something long term in Townsville, this is worth the call.
