Boilermaker / Heavy Fabricator | Queensland
Why Apply
Tired of welding cleats on beams and calling it fabrication?
The company is one of North Queensland’s largest and most technically advanced fabrication operations, based in Townsville with approximately 250 tradespeople across five divisions including steel fabrication, rail, material handling, petrochemical fuel piping, and a crane depot. They build reservoirs, sugar mill locomotives, stainless steel conveyors, abattoir equipment, and more. This is high-end, complex, one-off fabrication work and they need boilermakers who can actually do it.
- Earn 90k to 100k AUD/hr plus penalty rates, with a clear three-tier pay progression where top performers reach the highest rate and lead crews
- Free temporary accommodation for the right candidate
- Monday to Friday, home every night, no FIFO, no rosters, no swing shifts, and no mining camps
- Genuinely unique fabrication work across reservoirs, sugar mill locos, stainless conveyors, petrochemical pipework, and complex one-off projects, no two jobs the same
- Five divisions across structural, rail, petrochemical, stainless, and material handling, expand your skill set every single year
- 250-person operation with 30-year tenures, father and son teams, flat management, and a family-oriented culture where people are looked after
- Townsville lifestyle, affordable living, warm weather year-round, and a genuine long-term base for a family
The Role
You will be working in the fabrication and workshop division of a large, technically advanced industrial fabrication operation in Townsville. The work is complex and varied across platework, structural steel, machinery fabrication, and repair across one-off projects. Wayne is not after run-of-the-mill boilermakers. He needs tradespeople who can lay out developments on the floor, build transitions, lobster backs, and read plans. If you cannot do this, you will not pass the floor manager’s assessment.
Day to day you will be:
- Laying out developments on the floor and fabricating transitions, lobster backs, and complex platework components
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, weld symbols, dimensions, and specifications independently
- Welding across MIG, TIG, and MMA processes to a high standard across structural and platework applications
- Working with stainless steel including duplex and 2205 grades across conveyor and process equipment fabrication
- Rolling, pressing, and forming plate across complex one-off fabrication scopes
- Building toward and taking on leadership responsibilities as you progress through the three-tier pay system
Standard hours are Monday to Friday. No FIFO. No rosters. Home every night. If you are an experienced boilermaker, heavy fabricator, or platework specialist from a high-end fabrication, pressure vessel, tank building, or process piping background, this is the role to apply for.
What We Need
- Recognised trade qualification as a Boilermaker or Fabricator, non-negotiable
- Demonstrated high-end fabrication experience, layout, transitions, lobster backs, rolling, pressing, and platework, structural cleat-and-beam-only backgrounds will not be considered
- MIG, TIG, and MMA welding competency across all three processes
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, and specifications independently, this is tested at interview
- Stainless steel fabrication experience, strongly advantageous given the volume of duplex and 2205 stainless work in the shop
- Financially prepared to relocate, candidates must have funds for flights, initial accommodation, and personal transport
- Genuinely committed to settling in Townsville long term, candidates considering mine work or FIFO in the future are not the right fit for this role
- Family-oriented, settled mindset, Monday to Friday workshop life is the lifestyle on offer here
Why This Role
At 90k to 100k AUD plus penalties, with a transparent three-tier pay progression and some of the most technically interesting fabrication work available in North Queensland, this is a role that rewards genuine skill and keeps experienced tradespeople engaged year after year. Monday to Friday, home every night, in a city that is affordable, warm, and genuinely liveable for a family.
For Kiwi boilermakers and heavy fabricators who want to do real work, be paid properly for it, and build a long-term life in a city worth settling in, Townsville and this role are worth a serious look.
